29 Sep KFOR News Channel 4, Oklahoma City Honored With National News Emmy
Station Recognized For Severe Weather Coverage
KFOR NewsChannel 4, Tribune Broadcasting’s Oklahoma City station was honored with a prestigious national Emmy award at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) National News & Documentary Emmy Award ceremony in New York last night. KFOR won for Outstanding Regional News Story – Spot News for the coverage of the Moore tornado on May 20, 2013.
“Living in Oklahoma, our weather is tough but our people are tougher. The Moore tornado was devastating, but we know that our severe weather coverage saved lives that day. Our team did everything possible to alert viewers to the danger. We are honored to accept this Emmy award and we would like to dedicate this to the people of Moore,” said Wes Milbourn, President and General Manager for KFOR NewsChannel 4 and KAUT Freedom 43 TV.
KFOR NewsChannel 4 devoted three days of continuous live coverage in the aftermath of the May 20th tornado. NewsChannel 4 also became a collection site for water, clothing, food and monetary donations while working in conjunction with The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma.
“We were all deeply touched by what happened. Our news and weather team worked tirelessly from tracking the tornado as it approached Moore though covering the stories of survivors, the post storm clean up and the rebuilding process. Lives were changed when that tornado hit, but Oklahomans have this amazing inner strength that helps them bounce back from tragedy,” said Natalie Hughes, Executive Producer and acting News Director of KFOR NewsChannel 4 and KAUT Freedom 43 TV.
This is the third national Emmy award KFOR NewsChannel 4 has won. In 1974, KFOR won a national Emmy for Through The Looking Glass Darkly, a documentary about the rich history of black pioneers in Oklahoma. KFOR also won a national Emmy in 2006 for coverage of tornadoes in El Reno, Oklahoma.
KFOR NewsChannel 4 remains Oklahoma’s weather leader with a strong on air weather presence and an equally strong on line weather presence at kfor.com. KFOR offers two of the best weather apps in Oklahoma with the 4 Warn Me app and the new KFOR app.
